My roommate Heidi, surprised me by coming back to the boarding house on November 2. I wasn’t expecting any of my roommates till the 3rd. Since we don’t have anything to do yet, we decided to go to the nearest SM mall to while away the time. But, after taking a bath, I got too lazy to go to SM (truth be told, nagtitipid lang talaga ako hehe). But Heidi said she just wanted to eat some pasta so it’s okay if we don’t go as long as we get to eat some sort of Italian goodness. I’m not picky about my food – I probably eat anything edible (I’m such a liar as I don’t eat cooked carrots and ampalaya) – so Italian it is!

We walked over to Maginhawa, that fabled street with all kinds of eclectic mini restaurants, and voila, Friuli Trattoria is open! According to the freedictionary.com a trattoria is an informal restaurant or tavern serving simple Italian dishes. And that’s exactly what it was – a small Italian eatery with checkered table covers that remind me of grade school uniforms.

We decided to have a pasta each and one pizza. Since it was our first time there, we didn’t know that one serving of pasta is actually good for two. I realized quite late that Italian restaurants do have big servings. So Heidi and I looked at each other, took a deep breath and mentally noted that we’d have to walk miles after to burn down all the carbs! Lakas lang ng loob lumamon teh!

We ordered Puttanesca Pasta because Heidi wanted something that has olives in it and me, well, gaya gaya puto maya lang ako. The only downside of this dish was that they used angel hair (cappelini) noodles whose texture I don’t like because it reminds me of misua. Don’t get me wrong, I like misua, especially if served with hot soup and mixed with sardines on a cold night (that’s how my Dad cooks it), but not on Italian dishes. The sauce was fine, a bit spicy with lots of tomatoes, just the way I like it.

When our pizza was served, we were quite…surprised. We ordered Hot Sausage and Pepper so we were expecting lotsa meat with pepper and the usual toppings. But…we got a Hot Tomato and Pepper with Sprinkles of Sausage Pizza instead. I am not complaining about the taste – it was muy delicioso, plus I love love love tomatoes - we just don’t think it lived up to its name.

My Phone Amazes Me All the Time

My phone is actually really old. It’s a Sony Ericsson K770i model with a 3.2 mp camera. It makes me happy most of the time though (it get’s pretty useless at night when light isn’t sufficient). Dear Daddy,

Thank you for giving life to me and my siblings. Well, thank you for not running out on Mom when she found out she was pregnant with me.

Thank you for choosing family over work abroad.

Thank you for patiently teaching me the multiplication table. Memorize ko pa hanggang ngayon!

Thank you for being patient and understanding when I said I needed to shift out, and intercepting the phone when mom wanted to lash out on me. Thank you for always believing in me even though I’ve failed far too many subjects already.

Thank you for always putting our needs over yours. Lagi mong sinasabi di bale ng sira-sira ang brief mo basta may baon kami. Exag!

Thank you for making sure we always eat together, making meal times family time.

Thank you telling me that I’m beautiful, even when my teenage self had pimples all over my face.

Thank you for patiently bearing with all our hormones. I know we’ve disappointed and hurt you so many times, but thank you for loving us anyway.

Thank you for praying for me, I know I’ve been kept safe because you have prayed for me.

Thank you for always reminding us that we may not be rich materially, but we are rich in so many different ways.

Thank you for modeling to me that a real man:
